How to plan a Sedona spa day around the red rocks
When to hike, when to soak, what to eat and how to time sunset. A practical plan for building a full day around Solace Sands.

Sedona rewards slow days. The light changes every hour, the trails are best early, and the afternoon heat is made for water and shade. Here is how our hosts suggest building a full day, whether you are visiting for a weekend or live down the road in Cottonwood.
Early morning: move outside
In warmer months, hit the trail by 7 am. Easy options near the spa include the Thunder Mountain trail and the lower loop of Sugarloaf. Keep it moderate. A hard summit hike before a deep tissue massage is great, but save the longest routes for another day so you arrive relaxed rather than depleted.
Carry more water than you think you need, and bring a snack. The air is dry enough that thirst lags behind dehydration.
- Thunder Mountain trail: 10 minutes from the spa
- Sugarloaf loop: short, gentle and beautiful at sunrise
- Airport Mesa: save it for sunset if you can
Late morning: arrive and soak
Check in about 30 minutes before your first treatment. Change, shower off the trail dust and head to the Creekside Bathhouse. A round or two of warm pool, sauna and cold plunge loosens muscles and switches your mind into spa pace.
This is also the best moment for a body treatment. A turbinado sugar glow removes dust and sunscreen buildup and leaves skin ready for the rest of the day.
Midday: eat lightly
Our garden cafe serves grain bowls, citrus salads and chilled soups from 11 am to 3 pm. Aim for something light and hydrating. Large meals right before massage can be uncomfortable, so leave about an hour between lunch and your next face-down treatment.
Afternoon: the main treatment
Early afternoon is the hottest part of a Sedona day, which makes it perfect for being indoors on a warm table. Book your longest treatment here: a hot basalt stone ritual, a Red rock lift facial or a couples massage in the Mesa Suite.
Afterwards, stay in the heated stone lounge. Many guests nap. That is exactly the point.
Sunset: finish slow
On Fridays and Saturdays, the sunset circuit runs with herbal tea service as the light turns the rocks deep red. Otherwise, collect your things, drive to Airport Mesa for golden hour and have an early dinner in West Sedona.
If you would rather not plan any of this yourself, our spa day packages do it for you. The Solace Sands Day follows almost exactly this rhythm: arrive, soak, treat, relax, and a little more of each.
